Highlands & Islands research

Local context in a wider research picture.

Rural, island and Gaelic-language research for services that need to reach beyond the cities.

FabUX is based on the Isle of Lewis and works across Scotland and the UK. The Highlands and Islands are a specialist strength within that wider reach.

Distance, connectivity, language and access to services can change a journey. We help teams understand those differences through research with the people who experience them.

Our capability

Recruitment, language and setting belong in the research plan.

Specialist recruitment

Recruit around the people and experiences the research needs, including rural and island communities. Plan for geography, language, access needs and the practicalities of taking part.

Gaelic-language research

Fluent Gaelic-speaking moderators enable people to take part in Gaelic. Agree language preferences, materials and how findings will be shared with the wider team.

Remote & face to face

Blend remote sessions across dispersed locations with in-person work where context matters. Connectivity, travel and digital confidence inform the plan rather than becoming reasons to leave people out.

Face-to-face research in Stornoway

We run face-to-face research in central Stornoway, with comfortable spaces for participants and separate rooms for the research team.

A blended approach

Remote for spread. Face to face where it matters.

Remote sessions can reach participants across dispersed communities and let them use familiar devices. In-person work adds context when researching a physical service, visitor journey, language needs or barriers to participation.

The mix follows the research question. We’re experienced in hiring facilities and suitable local venues for face-to-face sessions in cities, towns and remote communities. Highlands and Islands work can connect with sessions in Inverness, Glasgow, Edinburgh and across the UK.

Natural task behaviour comes first, followed by retrospective questions to explore specific moments. Eye tracking can add visual evidence where it helps answer the question.

For agencies & programme teams

Add a defined Highlands & Islands work package.

Bring FabUX into a larger discovery, service-design or evaluation programme to cover a focused research need. You can retain the wider programme while we deliver the agreed local work.

  • Recruitment and participant incentives
  • Remote and face-to-face sessions
  • Gaelic-speaking moderation where required
  • Facilities and local session arrangements
  • Analysis, evidence and recommendations for the lead team

We agree the sample, deliverables, budget and handling of research material before work begins. Findings describe the people and contexts studied, with gaps made explicit.
